Magnus Timner

This week I, Magnus Timner, have been on GitHub Universe in San Francisco. There are two reasons for me being here; the first one is that Solidify is in the process of being one of the first verified GitHub partners in the world. The second one is that we consider GitHub being the leading tool in the opensource and innersource world and I wanted to learn more about it.

Partner Advisory board

The first day I spent together with some other invited partners at the GitHub Partner Advisory board. I did a short talk there about Solidifys experience with the partner enrollment program. There were lots of interesting discussion with other partners and the GitHub people working with the program.

The actual conference

The conference started with the CEO of GitHub Nat Friedman talking about the importance of opensource and how it's part of everyday development everywhere and only getting bigger.

Then the was a lot of nice new features being released, here are my favorites:

  • Git Hub actions a full CI/CD solution and native package management are now out of beta. With GitHub actions you can build on Windows, Linux and MacOS but also use self-hosted agents. You can also cache dependencies and build outputs to improve workflow execution time.
  • There is a GitHub for mobile in Beta
  • A new notification hub coming that lets you take control of all your GitHub notifications
  • Code navigation that will let you jump to definition and find all references
  • A new Code search experience in limited beta
  • GitHub has also created an artic cloud vault in Svalbard to secure public repositories for a thousand years, see a movie about it here: In Case of Apocalypse, Open This Arctic Code Vault
